해외는 외도 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있는 반면, 국내는 외도 연구가 적고 특히 외도자에 대한 연구가 드물어 외도자가 외도를 하게 되는 심리적 기제를 이해하고 이에 대한 치료적 방향성 제시하기 어려운 실정이다. 해외의 연구자들은 외도를 성적 외도와 정서적 외도로 구별하여 정의한 후 외도에서의 성차 연구를 주로 하였고, 외도가 일어나는 원인을 설명하는 연구 또한 진행하고 있다. 외도의 원인은 설명하 는 이론은 다양한데 이를 범주화하면 개인 내적 요인, 맥락적 요인, 동기 요인, 사회 문화적 요인으로 구 분할 있다. 개인 내적 요인으로 인해 외도가 일어난다고 보는 관점에는 진화론, 특질이론, 정신분석과 애 착이론이 해당한다. 맥락적 요인으로 인해 외도가 발생한다고 보는 관점에는 결혼 갈등과 결혼 만족도 관점이 있고, 이러한 관점은 결혼 자체에 대한 불만족과 부부 관계에서 충족되지 않은 욕구와 기대로 인 해 외도가 발생한다고 본다. 외도자의 외도 동기를 섹스, 친밀감, 사랑, 복수, 호기심, 안심, 자존감 고양, 스트레스 해소, 파트너의 돌봄, 감정 회피로 파악한 후, 외도 동기를 개인 내적 요인과 관련지어 설명하 는 외도 원인 연구도 있다. 사회 인류학적 관점은 사회적 권력 구조 하에서 외도를 이해하며 남성의 외 도에 대해서 허용적인 사회 문화적 배경이 외도에 영향을 미친다고 주장한다. 또한 외도 원인을 보다 통 합적으로 이해하려는 연구는 개인 내적 요인, 맥락적 요인, 시간 요인인 외도 진행 과정을 외도 요인으로 파악하고 외도자, 배우자, 결혼, 사회적 맥락이 외도의 진행 단계인 취약요인, 접근요인, 촉발요인, 유지 요인, 발각요인, 반응 요인 각각과 상호작용하는 가운데 외도가 발생하고 종결된다고 주장한다. 따라서 본 연구는 이와 같은 외도자의 외도 원인에 대한 선행연구 고찰을 통해 외도에 대한 이해를 증진시키고, 향후 외도 연구 방향성에 대하여 제언해보고자 한다.
Studies of infidelity has been actively examined abroad, however, Korea falls behind on examining the issues on infidelity. We face the difficulty in understanding psychological mechanism related to infidelity and means of advocating therapeutic orientation. Infidelity is distinguished by sexual infidelity and emotional infidelity. Infidelity is provoked by intrapersonal, interpersonal and contextual factors. Aspects of intrapersonal factors can constitute in trait, psychoanalysis and prospects of attachment. Likewise, contextual factors can incorporate marriage conflict, marital satisfaction and social anthropological perspective. Researches has suggested that motivations for infidelity derive from sex, intimacy, love, revenge, curiosity, security, self-esteem, stress relief, care giving and emotional detachment. Researchers have tried to connect motivations to theories for infidelity. The contextual perspective of infidelity derives between conflicts in marriage and marital satisfaction; motivated from their unseemly needs and desires. Additionally, social anthropological perspective identifies the background of infidelity, it persist an unbalanced social power structure and culture for sex. Integrated perspective for infidelity is composed by four source of dimensions and temporal dimensions. Source dimensions are involved partner, spouse, marriage and context. In contrast, temporal dimensions are predisposing factors, approach factors, precipitating factors, maintenance factors, disclosure factors and response factors. The paper review previous studies and behavior of infidelity. Furthermore, I would like to suggest to orientations of future research on infidelity in Korea.
