The purpose of this study was to explore the difficulties occurring in the culture
adaptation process of the foreign students to the Korean culture and the meaning of
leisure experience as an alternative plan for the adaptation to the Korean culture. To
accomplish the purpose of the study, 8 foreign students currently enrolled in I
university were selected and using the qualitative research method, participant
observation and in-depth interviews were conducted. The collected data were
analyzed as a thematic analysis then classifying theme, sub-theme and keyword the
framework of the categories was formed. The results showed that the difficulties in
cultural adaptation process were composed of differences of the unfamiliar culture
and difficulties in establishing relations. Also, in the cultural adaptation process, the
meaning of leisure experience was shown as cultural learning and acceptance,
reduction and healing of stress in cultural adaptation, and support system formation
through sharing. Through examining the leisure experience in Korea of foreign
students from various countries, the results of this study can be used a baseline data
to provide measures which can support successful student life and satisfaction with
their experience studying abroad.
